Latest News (1/3/2010)

Wizards of the Coast ended their licensing agreement with Code Monkey Publishing in 2006. As a result, the E-Tools program is no longer available or supported, nor is any of its officially-published data.

The old ET Helper web site (this page) was moved to a new location so it can still be made available for those needing to download it, but further changes to the program are unlikely. This web page itself has not otherwise been modified for several years and thus refelects exceptionally old information.

ET Helper

Wizards of the Coast has released their D&D software product named "D&D E-Tools". Even though the software is now being rapidly improved by Code Monkey Publishing , the initial version(s) of this product do not contain some kinds of functionality that are desired by the D&D community. ET Helper is a project I have begun in order to try to fill some of that void, until such time that it is handled internally by E-Tools.

ET Helper is designed to be modular. One module will provide the "base framework" (or "toolbox") for the rest of the system and will be required to run any of the other modules. It contains code that is shared by all the other modules and has a dynamic floating menu that allows you to launch any of the other modules. Once you have the toolbox, all other modules are optional -- simply download and unzip any of them that you would like to use.

ET Helper is self-configuring and does not require an installer. Simply un-zip all your downloaded modules into any one directory of your choosing and click (or double-click) on the "ETHelper.exe" (application) file from that directory to start it (it's the one with the green wizard icon). Remember: Un-zip all the modules you're using into the same directory (but it does not need to be the E-Tools directory itself - a separate directory is probably better).

The files found here have been used extensively during their development, but should still be considered beta software for safety. Feel free to try them out on your machine, but keep a backup copy of your database just in case (ET Helper can help you with this). I would like to encourage you to let me know (a) how you like the software; (b) if you found any problems with it; and (c) if you have any suggestions on how to make it better. You may send me email or leave me a message on the Code Monkey Publishing message board (where they have kindly set up an area for questions). Modules will appear here for a time while they are being beta tested, after which they will be individually moved to one or more permanent homes in more visible areas of the net (such as at Code Monkey Publishing or EN World ).

ET Helper does not require Microsoft Access, only the D&D E-Tools product (database) itself. (It does use some basic Windows facilities, but it will check those for you and let you know if any of them are too far out of date.)

Help files for ET Helper are being worked on by contributing users. If you're interested in helping, contact me by one of the above methods.

The following ET Helper beta test modules are available for downloading:

ETHelper.zip   (1.9Mb)   [Last updated: 11/29/2004 v0.66]
These are the base files and libraries that are shared among all the ET Helper modules. It includes a toolbox/menu bar to access the various modules that you have downloaded. This portion is required in order to use any of the other ET Helper modules. To install, simply un-zip this file (along with any other desired modules) in any convenient directory of your choice. (A new/empty one works best.) Only one of its files (named "ETHelper.exe") is executable and it starts the application. (It's the one with the green wizard icon.) This zip file also includes a simple "Read Me" file for those having difficulty getting started, which can also be viewed separately here.
ETH-Sets.zip   (1.0Mb)   [Last updated: 12/06/2004 v0.83]
This is the ET Helper "Set Manager" module. It is designed to let you archive or exchange your customized information in the E-Tools database. It provides import, export, rename, and delete facilities directly to specific subsets of the ET database. It supports E-Tools versions 1.00 through 1.5.666 and can migrate older data to newer versions. Un-zip this into the same directory as the ET Helper base files (above) and it will automatically appear in the toolbox.
ETH-Edit.zip   (2.3Mb)   [Last updated: 11/29/2004 v0.80]
This is the ET Helper "Database Editing" module. It is designed to provide direct editing facilities to E-Tools' main database. One editing screen is for "classes" and will allow the addition or modification of PC, NPC, Monster, or Prestige classes to the E-Tools product (to the extent that E-Tools itself will allow). A second editing screen allows the creation or modification of exotic materials and their effects. Future editing screens are planned. This module supports E-Tools versions 1.01 through 1.5.666. Un-zip this into the same directory as the ET Helper base files (above) and it will automatically appear in the toolbox.

In development

Currently planned: Beta-test versions of this and any other modules will be posted here as soon as they're ready for public testing.

Future possibilities

Future modules might include anything that E-Tools itself doesn't do. I'd be happy to hear any suggestions you have as to what else might be of interest. For instance, what about a "character planner" that helps you figure out what skills and feats to take in what order to target a specific goal? The possibilities are wide open.
